On the heels of the #MeToo movement and recent reports of sexual misconduct, we want to take a deep dive into what it actually means to be an ally of women. Join us as we explore what allyship is, share actionable steps that allies can take, and celebrate what allies are already doing to move women forward. We encourage all Lean In Seattle members to bring their allies—their spouse, partner, colleague, children, or friends. We want EVERYONE, including men, to join us for our first Masterclass of 2018 to dig into this important topic.

We’ll start with a fireside chat with the team from Mastin Labs, followed by a panel discussion with a diverse group of allies, led by The Riveter’s Head of Marketing, Jonna Bell.   1. Nikki Barron is a longtime activist for gender equality and sits on the board of Techbridge Girls Seattle and is a volunteer for the Female Founders Alliance and Lean In Seattle. She is also the Director of Marketing at Mastin Labs.

  2. Andrew Shepherd has been pursuing work ranging from documentary to weddings under his company, Lost Fox Creative, for the past 7 years. He now is the video content creator at Mastin Labs.

  3. Former photojournalist and wedding photographer Kirk Mastin is the founder of Mastin Labs, a company that specializes in film emulation software.

  4. Chad Syme is the Creative Director at Mastin Labs, with a background comprised of diverse design disciplines and Industries, including technology and television. As a father of two creative and imaginative young girls, Chad encourages them to not only eat their dinner, and to also explore any and all ideas and interests they have.


  1. As Vice President at CallisonRTKL, Chris Beza is a veteran of 20 years in the architecture industry, one known for being predominantly male. Beza has fostered teams of high-performing designers in creating some of the world’s most memorable and successful environments in retail, shopping centers, and workplaces. His client list spans the globe, including Nordstrom, IKEA, Williams-Sonoma, Majid Al Futtaim, Al Futtaim Group, Al Maabar, Oxford Properties, Cadillac Fairview, and Bentall Kennedy. Beza’s understanding of what it takes to create user-driven experiences extends to his curation of inclusive design teams that bring a breadth of experience and backgrounds to his clients’ challenges. Beza is able to combine his leverage of being male in a man’s industry with the challenges of being of minority descent.  His teams have been repeatedly recognized for solutions that embody the character and spirit of his clients’ brands, cultures, and visions, creating memorable, lasting, and award-winning spaces.
  2. Steve Banfield is CEO of ReachNow, mobility services from the BMW Group. A 20-year technology industry veteran, Banfield has an acumen for leading successful teams that build digital products and services loved by millions worldwide. Under Banfield’s leadership, ReachNow grew quickly during the company’s first year. Now serving more than 80,000 members in Seattle, Portland, and Brooklyn, ReachNow is helping lead the transformation of urban mobility in key markets across North America. Banfield comes to ReachNow from INRIX, where he served as the Chief Marketing Officer, and led INRIX into the smart parking marketing with the acquisition of ParkMe and oversaw the launch of an on-street parking prediction solution featuring the electric BMW i3. Prior to joining INRIX, Banfield brought consumer services to worldwide audiences at massive scale with roles at premier technology companies like Sony, Microsoft, Paramount Pictures (Screenlife), Rightside, and RealNetworks.
  3. As Dean and CEO of Northeastern University-Seattle, Peter Temes leads an institution that boasts the highest proportion of female students and grads in graduate computer science among elite schools in the US: 50% in the next 12-months cohort. Prior to NU-Seattle, Temes founded the Innovation in Large Organizations Institute (ILO), focused on bringing best practices in innovation to the private and public sectors. Temes is also the author of a soon-to-be-released book on digital ethics titled We the People: A Guide to Digital Ethics for People, Organizations, and Robots of All Kinds. Temes has led research initiatives for a variety of renowned companies in the technology, financing, and consumer marketing sectors, including Goldman Sachs, Microsoft, and Disney. His dissertation was on Martin Luther King, Black Power, and the Idea of History. Through NU-Seattle, Temes runs the DocumentAmerica project, working in collaboration with Google and low-income high school students in Washington, Alabama, and New York states to create social documentary work about their communities.   4. Ben Golden is General Counsel at TUNE, a mobile marketing analytics company with headquarters in Seattle, nine offices around the world, and just under 300 employees. Prior to joining TUNE, Ben was an attorney at Perkins Coie, served on the University of Washington's Board of Regents, managed a state legislative campaign, researched in Ghana on behalf of a start-up social enterprise, split an apple strudel with Kofi Annan while working at a think tank in Salzburg, and lectured on Pink Floyd lyrics as an English teacher in Taiwan. Ben currently serves on the boards of Washington Technology Industry Association and the UW Alumni Association.


Our moderator, Jonna Bell, is the Head of Marketing at The Riveter, female-forward workspaces and community platform designed for women in business to connect and access business acumen and resources. A growth hacker, she comes from the industries of hospitality, new technology, e-commerce, higher education, and design. Clients have included Northeastern University, Visa, Microsoft, and startups in cleantech, space travel, beauty, manufacturing, and cancer research. Over the course of her career, Bell has navigated the corporate ladders of being the youngest, and, many times, the only woman at the table. She now blends her experiences and inherent skills into what she’s passionately obsessed with: women succeeding, and ensuring the path is clearer for their ambition. The Riveter is one of the fastest growing workspaces in the U.S., and Bell’s second startup in social impact and disruption. Her first was in sports apparel, manufacturing, and social responsibility. Bell also sits on the advisory boards of several startups in both technology and social, including Vermouth, is a former leader of Lean In Seattle, and frequently hosts events that gather women through storytelling.
